The mission of PPSDRC's Carolyn Shuck Education and Training Center is to help people make sound sexual health decisions through comprehensive, sexuality education..
Comprehensive, reality-based sexuality education seeks to help people develop a positive view of sexuality, provide them with information and skills to take care of their sexual health, and to help them acquire skills to make responsible decisions now and in the future.
PPSDRC focuses on the New 3Rs—Rights, Respect, and Responsibility.
Rights We believe that youth have the right to accurate information and access to health services.
Respect We respect youth as valued members of the community, with much to offer.
Responsibility We trust youth and adults to make responsible decisions when they are provided information, taught skills, and given support to do so.
Comprehensive Sexuality Education Comprehensive sexuality education:
- Teaches that sexuality is a natural, normal, healthy part of life
- Provides opportunity for young people to develop and understand their values, attitudes, and beliefs about sexuality
- Helps young people develop relationship and interpersonal skills
- Teaches that abstinence from sexual intercourse is the only certain way to prevent unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections
- Includes a wide variety of sexuality related topics, such as human development, relationships, interpersonal skills, sexual health, and society and culture
- Includes accurate medical information about contraception, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and how condoms and contraception can decrease the risks of STIs and unintended pregnancy.
PPSDRC’s Education and Training programs employ a variety of teaching techniques including small and large group discussions as well as role-playing and other experiential learning activities. These diverse teaching methods help address the different learning styles of students, as well as encourage the retention of information. Educators are culturally competent and programs are linguistically and developmentally appropriate. All classes can be provided in either English or Spanish.
PPSDRC’s Education and Training Department offers the following services:

Peer Education PPSDRC educators work in collaboration with local high schools’ peer education programs. Sexuality education and training on anatomy and physiology, birth control, and sexually transmitted infections is provided to peer educators so they are able to assist students at local high schools.
For more information, please contact our Peer Education Coordinator at (619) 881-4551.
Parent Education Planned Parenthood believes that parents should be their children's primary sexuality educators. Parents know their children better than anyone else and children need to have discussions about sexuality in the context of their family's values.
Parent Education Classes encourage parents to review their own values and to consider the messages they would like to communicate to their children. Presentations can also include information about puberty, birth control, and the role media plays in shaping our cultural view of sexuality.
